Ways to Make your New Home Eco-Friendly
You have moved into a newly built lovely house with a big yard and friendly neighbors and you are about to start a new life and have no renovations in the near future to think about. You are thinking of staying here until the day you die. Well, why not make it a house that is also nice to the environment? There are a few easy and not so easy tips for you that will make your house greener. Some might be just everyday tasks and some may ask for a little more energy from your part to save some energy in your house. Always remember that everything counts. If you only do one of these things for a start, that is great.
First of all you should check your house for any leaks. And I do not mean gas leaks; I really hope you already have checked that out. No, I am talking about air leaks. Because if there are, the air that you pay for that should be inside the house sips out and the cold air from outside will break in and cause your heating systems to start working which will only waste your money and energy. Call on a home energy auditor to check if there are any potential leaks in your house and when all of those are found just fill them in by using caulk for example. When this is done there are some other things you can think about when using heating or cooling systems. You should of course use them as little as possible. I myself like to keep the cool air outside the house and turn on a fire and keeping the warming system on a lower energy rate.
NOTE: Always when using the heating or cooling systems, keep your windows and doors shut.
When using an AC, don’t overuse it. Keep it on only if needed and with a reasonable degree. On a hot day, try and put down the blinds not to let the sun in and turn the cooling system down. And all applies that has filters should be cleaned periodically; appliances where the filters are stocked will work extra hard and waste more energy. Keep them clean.
Light is also an energy waster if you do not use it right. There is energy saving light bulbs in almost every store nowadays. Dimmers are also a good way to go; sometimes you don’t need to fill up a whole room to see where you put your feet. Candles are also a nice way of lighting – and warming – up a room. Just be careful.
Water should also be used sparingly. Only load full machines in your dish – and clothing washer, shower don’t bath, don’t keep the water running and turn it off while not using it.
Also there are smaller things you can do in your everyday life, things like try and not to peak into the oven fifteen times to see if your pie is done, and try and use the micro wave more when only heating things. When shopping things for you house, think green like energy sparing dish washers and refrigerators and such. Adjust the temperature in your freezer and fridge to about 2 to 5 °C and the freezer on about -15. There are also plugs that can go on stand-by by pressing a button which is a huge energy saver. Wash some of your clothes in cold water, they will get clean anyway. Defrost your food during the day rather than in the micro wave it will save energy.
These are only a few tips on what you can do. When shopping for supplies, always think green. More and more people do it and it helps us to move in the right direction.
